Wagramer Straße: Redesigning a bike lane and green spaces on Vienna’s Wagramer street
The Wagramer Straße in Vienna’s Donaustadt District is undergoing a 1.1 kilometer redesign between Donauzentrum and Kagraner Platz. Previously the road featured at least two lanes for cars in each direction alongside old tram tracks in the center. However, these tracks became obsolete in 2013 with the extension of the U1 subway line to Leopoldau. Since then, only public buses and emergency vehicles have used the space. Now, more than a decade later, after several unrealized plans, the tram tracks will be removed. This will create space for a new four meter wide, two way bike path and significantly more green areas. The centerpiece will be a small “street park”: Between Donauzentrum and Steigenteschgasse, a green area about 250 meters long and 10 meters wide will be created, featuring trees, shrubs and seating areas.
