Piazza Matteotti

The maritime façade of the city of Cagliari is situated along the front of Via Roma, extending from Piazza Matteotti to Piazza Amendola. However, this natural connection between the city and the sea is currently obstructed by heavy automobile traffic, blocking the transversal link between Cagliari and the sea. To restore this historical relationship, a reorganization of traffic is proposed, prioritizing pedestrians, soft mobility, and public transportation while enhancing neighborhood parking facilities. This shift in priorities aims to favor people over vehicles. Secondly, a public space will be designed to connect Piazza Matteotti with Piazza Amendola in a coherent and unified system, inspired by historical images from the 1930s. The design will feature an intense planting of trees, creating a continuous canopy that provides shade, much like an open-air pergola. This new lungomare will integrate all transversal connections from the city to the port through a carefully designed system of pavements and urban furniture, with a special emphasis on the transversal axis of Largo Carlo Felice. This area will serve as both a “gateway” and a “civic living room,” symbolizing the entrance to the city. Greenery will play a central role, becoming the primary material and protagonist of this new public space. The project envisions a carefully curated selection of Ficus Magnolioides trees, similar to those found in Matteotti and Amendola. These will create a visual and physical connection between the two existing squares, marking the beginning and end of the new lungomare of Via Roma.
